Catherine Ford was born in Bloomsbury, London; her father had left her family and she was taken care of by her mother, grandmother and godparents. As a young girl, she was diagnosed with an obsessive compulsive disorder. She also experienced anxiety because of the word"association. Ford began to become attracted to acting in her teens, and joined the National Youth Theatre. After being accepted into the Sylvia Young Theatre School for brief time but Ford realized it was not the right venue for her. Ford decided to apply for admission to Central School of Speech and Drama and getting a spot at the third time she applied for and was awarded a place at Central School of Speech and Drama. One of her classmates were Shaun Dingwall, who would later have a recurring role as Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford graduated in 1993. She already made a TV appearance on a show in 1992 called Surgical Spirit. She adopted the name Catherine Tate. Tate appeared on TV in the Nineties through shows like The Bill and Men Behaving Badly. The regular theatre work she performed brought her into The Royal Shakespeare Company, for the 2000-2001 Season. Tate was recognized for her comedy stand-up that became part of her resume in the year 1996.
